Mobile operators say Telegram, WhatsApp traffic rises in Jan–Sep
MOSCOW, Oct 24 (PRIME) -- Russians have started using messengers more, mainly Telegram whose Internet traffic increased 35% to 100% in January–September, while WhatsApp’s traffic rose 20% to 50%, the mobile operators told PRIME on Tuesday.
MegaFon said that Telegram’s traffic jumped by 80% on the year in January–September. VimpelCom, which works as Beeline, said that the messenger’s traffic rose by 40%, while it grew by 35% at MTS. T2 RTK Holding, which works as Tele2, said the traffic almost doubled.
Russians spent 50% more traffic on WhatsApp, MegaFon said. MTS saw a 29% rise and T2 RTK Holding had a 20% increase in the number of gigabytes of data spent on this messenger. VimpelCom saw no changes.
MegaFon also said that mobile Internet consumption increased by 10% on the year in January–September, and the people spent it not only on the messengers, but also on media and news services. Online cinemas were also popular with a fifth of the all data consumed.
